If you’re not happy with your hair’s current state, you should think about creating a routine to improve and maintain its health. For some that might sound a bit intimidating, especially if you don’t know much about hair. However, creating a haircare regimen is well worth it in the end. Creating a regimen is a bit of trial and error, so to help you get started here is some advice for you to keep in mind.
To start, you’ll want to know your hair type. Different hair types need different hair care. For example, somebody with type 4 hair (on the very dry side) could need heavy moisturizing products to prevent their hair from drying out. On the other hand, someone with type 1 hair (on the oily side) using heavy moisturizers would be a bad idea since type 1 hair is known for being oily already.
Assess your hair’s condition. You need to know if you’re making a plan to maintain its health or improve it. Also, the condition of your hair will hint towards bad haircare practices that need to be taken out of your life. Look for things like split ends, moisture levels, and strength.
Know how often to wash your hair. Washing your hair every day, especially if you use harsh products, is actually bad for your hairs’ health. Shampoo takes out the moisture from your hair every time you use it and while it does cleanse your hair, if you do it too much you’ll end up with dry fragile hair. Every time you use shampoo, follow it up with moisturizing conditioner. You should try to cleanse your hair about once a week or whenever you experience a lot of build-up. For the washes in-between, you are fine to just use conditioner to cleanse your scalp.
Have a deep conditioning schedule. Deep conditioning is very beneficial for those wanting to have long hair. There are other benefits as well since not all conditioners are made the same. There are ones to make your hair easier to manage and ones to provide intense nourishment. Deep conditioning is recommended about once a week, but of course, it can vary depending on the person.
Keep on a routine to see the results. You can’t just try it out for a few days and complain about not seeing results. You also shouldn’t stray off course and experiment with various products since you won’t be able to figure out what product caused what result.
Reevaluate your health of your hair and decide if you should make changes. You should do so every few months, so you're not using products and practices that no longer benefit you. Look for what has improved, what needs more help, and if any new problems have appeared. You should document this in one way or another; write it in a journal, in your phone, or take pictures. Video works great too.
