Do you know what a “balayage” is? Or how about the difference between “lowlights” and “highlights?” If you do know what those things mean, it’s probably because you asked your stylist or maybe googled it in your spare time, but we don’t expect everyone to take that kind of time. Asking questions can be difficult for some and googling the term you heard at your appointment is probably the last thing on your mind after you leave. Here are some standard coloring service terms used by stylists so you can be prepared for your next appointment.
Comes from the French word for “sweep.” A lightener or color is hand-painted with a brush to create a more natural and customizable look. This technique creates a subtle transition from your roots to the ends of your hair. The color continues to look natural as it grows out, thus making it a wonderful option for those wanting a low-maintenance look.
These are strands or sections of hair made lighter than your natural color. A lightener is used to achieve this look. Adding highlights brightens your overall color and add dimension to your style.
The opposite of highlights. Strands or sections are turned darker than your natural color. Both lowlights and highlights are great for those who want subtle changes.
This is what needs to be done when you want to fix a botched coloring job. Usually, the cause is box colors, at-home color, or at-home lighteners. In order to fix this understanding of color theory and a bit of chemistry is needed. In cases like this, a stylist will need to evaluate your hair’s condition and will inform you of the steps required to fix the damage.

Perms are just one of the services that we offer that use the latest techniques and products. If you’ve got straight hair and are wanting to add a little wave or a lot of curls, our professional perms might be just what you’re looking for.
Perms were popular in the ’80s and ’90s and are slowly coming back. Now, the process allows you to get smooth and stylish curls minus the frizz! With updated technology, we only use the best in Aveda products to keep your hair healthy and soft while adding the curls you want.
There’s more customization than ever when choosing what kind of perm you want. Not only are there more options for the stylist to choose from like solution strength and perming time, but clients have more options too. Clients can choose from soft beach waves to smooth tight curls. The size of the rods used determines the size of the curls and can be done as full curls or just the ends of the hair.
The methods used puts emphasis on repair and conditioning, ensuring you get soft and natural results. From start to finish conditioning gives you healthy hair for the duration of your perm.
It’s essential to communicate with your stylist, so set up a consultation and bring pictures of the style you want. Ask about pre-perm treatments for your current hair state and ask about post-perm care so you know how long to wait before washing, what products to use, and how often you should use them.

If you’re not happy with your hair’s current state, you should think about creating a routine to improve and maintain its health. For some that might sound a bit intimidating, especially if you don’t know much about hair. However, creating a haircare regimen is well worth it in the end. Creating a regimen is a bit of trial and error, so to help you get started here is some advice for you to keep in mind.
To start, you’ll want to know your hair type. Different hair types need different hair care. For example, somebody with type 4 hair (on the very dry side) could need heavy moisturizing products to prevent their hair from drying out. On the other hand, someone with type 1 hair (on the oily side) using heavy moisturizers would be a bad idea since type 1 hair is known for being oily already.
Assess your hair’s condition. You need to know if you’re making a plan to maintain its health or improve it. Also, the condition of your hair will hint towards bad haircare practices that need to be taken out of your life. Look for things like split ends, moisture levels, and strength.
Know how often to wash your hair. Washing your hair every day, especially if you use harsh products, is actually bad for your hairs’ health. Shampoo takes out the moisture from your hair every time you use it and while it does cleanse your hair, if you do it too much you’ll end up with dry fragile hair. Every time you use shampoo, follow it up with moisturizing conditioner. You should try to cleanse your hair about once a week or whenever you experience a lot of build-up. For the washes in-between, you are fine to just use conditioner to cleanse your scalp.
Have a deep conditioning schedule. Deep conditioning is very beneficial for those wanting to have long hair. There are other benefits as well since not all conditioners are made the same. There are ones to make your hair easier to manage and ones to provide intense nourishment. Deep conditioning is recommended about once a week, but of course, it can vary depending on the person.
Keep on a routine to see the results. You can’t just try it out for a few days and complain about not seeing results. You also shouldn’t stray off course and experiment with various products since you won’t be able to figure out what product caused what result.
Reevaluate your health of your hair and decide if you should make changes. You should do so every few months, so you're not using products and practices that no longer benefit you. Look for what has improved, what needs more help, and if any new problems have appeared. You should document this in one way or another; write it in a journal, in your phone, or take pictures. Video works great too.

You’ve just walked out of the salon with your fabulous new hair color. You feel great, look fantastic, and want to keep that color looking vibrant for as long as you can. Hair care between professional hair coloring is an important part of keeping it looking great. Here are some tips so you can get the most out of your color.
Talk to your stylist
Start by talking to your stylist since they are the best experts on the products used for your coloring as well as your individual hair type and texture. They have the resources and know how to recommend the best products and techniques for keeping everything looking great until your next salon visit.
Shampooing allows pigment to escape from your hair strands with every wash. Ask your stylist how long you should wait before shampooing, and after, that do it less often. Your hair only needs shampoo about two or three times each week, so washing every day isn’t necessary. Use a dry shampoo to keep things fresh, or try co-shampooing, which is using conditioner instead of shampoo to wash your hair.
Conditioning is a very important step for color-treated hair because it keeps it soft, healthy-looking, and helps repair damage. Well-conditioned hair also makes your color look vibrant and shimmering, and last longer. Use a color-safe conditioner that works for your hair type. You should ask your stylist to recommend the best product for you.
Your hair may need extra care after coloring. If it’s dry and unmanageable even after conditioning, you should try deep conditioning treatments to restore your hair’s health. Ask your stylist about a deep conditioning treatment at the salon or ask for products you can use at home.
Use heated styling tools only when necessary - repeated use of heat on your hair will damage it. If you need to use heated styling tools, apply a heat protectant first. You can also turn down the heat when you’re in the shower to keep hair looking vibrant and healthy.
Get a trim
Removing split ends will help keep your hair looking great and prevents further damage. You should get a trim before your coloring and visit the salon for regular trims, about every four to six weeks, to maintain fabulous looking hair.
Balance your diet
A healthy diet shows on the outside, with soft, healthy skin, hair, and nails. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables with lean proteins and whole grains. Try to avoid junk food as much as you can. This all helps your body to build keratin, the protein your hair needs to stay strong and look great.

Summer is officially here and most people have already pulled out their summer wear. Darker and more neutral colored clothes get moved aside and colors that better match the bright surroundings are moved front and center. Makeup changes in the same way. Whether you're wanting to stay in the loop or are just looking for inspiration here are four trends for summer 2019.
It’s a drastic change from the popular thick and heavily drawn out brows you’ve seen on platforms like Instagram. Add subtle thickness in desired areas and use brow gel to brush them into place. If you’re wanting to darken them just a bit tinted, gels are available.
It could be clear or colored but typically the colors are on the more sheer side. When choosing the colored option, look for pastels, peachy tones are a common go-to. If you're concerned about the sticky feel, don’t worry! Your concerns are not alone, but know that this trend has ushered in products with thoughtful formulas that allow easy wear.
This is perfect for you if you’re wanting to draw more attention to your eyes. Stray away from the usual black and brown liners and pick colors such as bright blue and vibrant purple. Experiment with line thickness and even shapes for unique outcomes. Having such bold liner, you won’t need to worry much about lips so you can easily pick a solid color that matches your liner.
Themes are a thing! However, this time it’s not multiple colors but rather just one. So you won’t have to figure out what shades compliment each other, a good thing for some. You want to incorporate the colors into your eyes, lips, and cheeks. Softer colors like pinks and peachy oranges are a great go-to but don’t be afraid to branch out.
Now this isn’t a trend but a necessity. You need to make sure you have the needed sun protection! It’s always in season for healthy skin so be mindful and protect it from the harsh UV rays this summer the best you can.

Muscle spasms that create elevated pain in spots of injured tissue can be prevented by regular massage. Massage also helps to release endorphins that act to remove the pain.
Blood flow to your muscles and lymph fluid circulation improve and leads to your body being able to effectively carry out waste products. Your immune system improves its ability to fight bacteria and infections when you’re able to relax, sleep well, and stress less.
Lowers Blood Pressure
Consistent massages help reduce blood pressure levels which in turn reduces stress, anxiety, and tension.
We offer a variety of massages and massage packages each with different components and durations, you’re sure to find one to suit your needs.

Summer is approaching quickly and most people take it as a sign that it’s time to change up their wardrobe as well as hair. You’re most likely going to be out and about enjoying the summer weather as much as you can, might as well feel and look your best. While you can do anything you want with your hair, it can be hard to decide and even stressful when it shouldn’t be. At HQ Salon, we want to make the decisions easier on you, so here are some popular haircuts for the summer.
Ask your stylist for a blunt cut that rests at mid-neck or jawline with no layering. Wear it sleek and straight and if desired curl the ends up just a tiny bit. For the part, either go for the center or a deep side part. Your hair may need to be thinned out a bit if you have very thick hair so it doesn’t look boxy and heavy.
The Long Bob, Lob for short, is most often seen resting at the base of the neck this year. It’s just long enough to be able to pull back and keep out of your face. Add some textured layers to give it an intentionally messy look when you style it.
If you want to keep your hair shoulder length or longer, give this a try. Light layering with the shortest length at the jawline around the face. If you have straight hair use a curling iron to add some loose waves to add a bit of movement throughout.
If you like short hair or want to give it a go, this is a good cut. Short sides that transition to longer hair on top of the head. Not just an inch longer but massive length that gives you a lot to work with. Leave it to show off natural textures or style it with knots, braids, jewelry.

Now that it’s springtime and summer is approaching fast, winter clothing is packed away and lighter clothing like summer dresses, tank tops, and shorts are moved to the front. With all that skin exposed, you’ll want it to be smooth and free of any unwanted hair. But maybe you’re not sure how to go about it? Here is what you get from choosing waxing as your hair removal method.
Stubble returns quickly if you remove hair by shaving and if you’ve got dark hair on a lighter complexion it stands out easier. Shaving only cuts hair above the skin's surface, leaving the roots intact and allowing them to regrow quickly. With waxing, hair is removed at the root and to regrow it has to start from the follicle. This means it will take longer for the hair to be visible. You’ll get smoother results for much longer, about four to six weeks.
Hair appears thicker after shaving because of the angle it’s cut and this angle makes it more visible as it regrows. That’s where the belief that hair grows back thicker when you shave comes from. With waxing, hair regrowth is finer, and after a while of regular waxing, some areas may no longer regrow hair at all.
It’s super easy to accidentally cut our skin while shaving, a quick flick at the wrong angle and now you got a sharp stinging pain. It happens but it still sucks, you gotta deal with a mess and unless you want a repeat you have to be careful with the new scab. While the cuts are typically small, they can leave you with annoying scars. Waxing eliminates that problem, a quick pull and a whole patch of hair gone in seconds, leaving your skin silky smooth without any cuts.
Waxing has the additional benefit of removing dead skin cells and pollutants from your skin. Your skin’s natural rejuvenation processes is also stimulated which helps your skin look its best. The regeneration leads to improved visible texture issues like tiny lines and even scars.
